Brief Career Details
Graduated from the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI, Galway) in 1965 in Experimental Physics with a B.Sc (1st. Class Honours), followed by a M.Sc. degree (1967). Obtained a Ph.D. degree in Atmospheric Physics from the University of Manchester, England, in 1971.Subsequently, did post-doctoral research work at UMIST, Manchester; University of Durham, England and at the Atmospheric Sciences Laboratory, White Sands, New Mexico, USA. In 1980, was appointed Statutory Lecturer in the Department of Experimental Physics, NUI, Galway. Visiting US National Senior Research Council Fellow for a 12 month sabbatical period (1986-87) at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Boulder, CO. Was awarded a D.Sc. degree from the University of Manchester, 1987. Personal Professor of Physics since 1990. Visiting Bye Fellow at the University of Cambridge during sabbatical year in 1997. Was awarded Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Göteborg, Sweden in 2000.
Research Interests
Main research interest is in Atmospheric Science which includes the fields of atmospheric aerosol and cloud physics, climate and environmental change, atmospheric pollution and air quality. Has been instrumental, in collaboration with departmental colleagues, in establishing and operating the Atmospheric Research Station at Mace Head, near Carna, Co. Galway. Participation in several international (EU for example) and national collaborative research projects largely based at the Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station.
